Our goal is to save online fandom history that is at risk of being lost. Feel free to join our conversations.

Our current project at this comm is saving fandom history from LiveJournal.

Especially important posts here will be placed in the Memories. You can find more information about us at our Tumblr blog. Our Discord chatroom is also working on a project to save fandom history from Yahoo Groups.

Founded in 1999, Vox Poppuli, run by alicettlg, has been a webhost for dozens of fan websites, both personal sites and archives.

This is what Vox Poppuli looked like in 2006, when I first saw its webhost page. But the mere list doesn't give a sense of how vast the number of fics and fandom resources were that Vox Poppuli hosted. Many of those sites were multi-author sites.

Among other things, Vox Poppuli hosted Fan Email Lists, which was my entry into the fandom community.

Much of the fic hosted at Vox Poppuli has been moved over the years to AO3, but I know of at least one case where the fics have not been moved to AO3, and I'm sure there are many more, not all of which can be fully recovered through the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. So this is another major loss of fandom history, which is sad to see.

In late 2019, TV, movie, anime, gaming, celebrity, music, and book fans assembled to save Yahoo Groups after Verizon decided to shut down the mailing list service. Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project is working on identifying the fandoms of Persian language mailing lists and can use your help. We need people who can read Persian/Farsi natively* right now to help us identify the Unknown groups. You can work at your own pace and it is a low time commitment. Work is done on Discord, just reading the group description and a few messages and summarizing the messages in English, maybe answering a question of clarification ("is it talking about X or Y?"). No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to Discord.

The biggest glaring red flag: they no longer have any visible active moderation team or admins that are working on Fanfiction.net specifically. Reports are going unanswered on everything from plagiarism to abuse to page-breaking ads. Emails are not returned. Twitter mentions are never addressed.

1) NightOwl of Yahoo Groups Crusade Headquarters, who helped to spread word about our project's work to preserve fandom Yahoo Groups, has announced the death of her mother. NightOwl was brave enough to work to save Yahoo Groups at the same time she was caring for her ill mother. We're grateful to NightOwl for her generous assistance, and we extend our sympathies to her for her loss.

2) Both [personal profile] morgandawn and I were having some difficulties with switching the status of news posts from members-only to public, so I've dealt with the issue by making all future posts here public. This doesn't affect past posts, and you're always welcome to make members-only posts here.

3) We're wrapping up the first phase of our Yahoo Project over at our Discord chatroom. The second phase will be dealing with all the data we've gathered; that will take many more months.

4) Due to time constraints, I'm retiring as a moderator, both here and at our Discord chatroom. I'm still working for Fandom History Rescue Project, and I'll continue to link to any news/blog articles that mention our project, but I won't be doing full links roundups in the future. I leave this comm's moderation in the amazingly able hands of [personal profile] morgandawn and [personal profile] arcadianmaggie.

Feel free to start threads of your own on any fandom history preservation topics!

FANDOM HISTORY RESCUE PROJECT IN THE NEWS

Weekly Summary 02/03/2020, by The Mad Programer at Data Horde. "The 'Save Yahoo Groups' team (aka Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project, aka Yahoo Gedden) hasn't fully tallied up their data yet, but have counted the number of groups they've downloaded so far to be about 84,655 and the number of groups they are still retrieving from to be about 38,000 for a total of 123K groups!" [Dusk's note: We still don't have final figures, but the total estimate has gone up since then.]

The Geocities Gallery. "A restored visual gallery of the archived Geocities sites, sorted by neighborhood." There's no internal search engine yet, so you'll have to use an external search engine to find the fandom sites, which are scattered throughout this archive. A brief history of Yahoo Groups, by Michael Martinez, writing several years ago. "Do you remember FindMail? Probably not. It was an email list archiving service started in January 1997. FindMail transformed itself into an email list hosting provider called MakeList. By December 1998 MakeList transformed itself into eGroups. eGroups merged with a rival mailing list provider, OneList, in 1999, retaining the name eGroups. Yahoo! bought eGroups in August 2000 and rebranded the service as Yahoo! Groups."

Verizon Is Undermining Efforts To Archive Yahoo Groups . . . For No Coherent Reason, by Karl Bode at Techdirt (back in December). They're also urging Yahoo to delay the deletion."

These crusaders want to preserve ‘human culture’ online. Their latest target: Yahoo Groups, by The Washington Post. Excerpt:

Margaret Farrelly is part of the majority that uses Yahoo Groups through email these days. She says she has scaled down from hundreds of group memberships to just a few.

But she was still alarmed when Scott's tweet about Yahoo Groups made it into her feed. The Wisconsin resident knows the site was an early home for something she loves: fan fiction. She belongs to a collective that has identified about 35,000 fandom-related Yahoo groups to save.

Farrelly also knows someone trying to capture more than 100 beekeeping groups, and someone passionate about genealogy and adoption support circles. Another person is focusing on astronomy groups filled with photos they say may not exist anywhere else.

"It's just depressing to think how much is going to be lost," Farrelly said.

Her fandom group turned to the Archive Team for help.

It would be even better if fans gave our works this attention before a crisis hits. While creators have often used multiple sites to host their works, one type of work has generally been left out of fans' efforts at archiving and preserving fanworks -- meta. . . . [Our member [personal profile] doranwen posted this at her journal. She has given me permission to repost it here. It concerns our companion project to save fandom Yahoo Groups. --Dusk]

One of the other members of our small Yahoo Groups Fandom Rescue Project was talking to me about how past archival teams didn't get enough non-Western media and a lot of people were very upset by this. They were concerned our project was going to have the same problem.

So let me explain where things stand.

We have literally thousands of groups we're trying to save. There are about half a dozen of us regulars, if that. More volunteers come, join one or two tabs of 250 groups apiece, and then are done and leave. Some don't even get to half a tab and say they can't finish. (For perspective, I can join a whole tab in a couple focused hours.)

At this point, I've been told not to bother running more searches because we can't save all that we've already discovered. So which fandoms have we prioritized? A combination of the very biggest ones that we're aware of, and the ones we love the most. (If we're going to spend all this time saving, you bet we're going to make sure our beloved fandoms are archived.)

We would love for people to show up and go "hey, can I get a list of groups for these fandoms?" so they can save them. But the people aren't coming. No one wants to spend the time saving. (I understand that not everyone can, but if the fandoms are that big, one would think someone would be working on them!)

I can hope that there's parallel projects to ours in other countries, saving the fandom groups from their media, but I haven't heard of any. So Eastern media is likely to be underrepresented. It's not out of unwillingness to save, but we can't save what we don't know of, and we can't save what we don't have the time for.

So here's the final call: If you want more groups saved, come help. If you want a list of groups for you to save, join our Discord and ask. (Link found here.) I can run a search of a partial (it's impossible to get a complete list out there - we're having to do all manner of processing data to get what we've got) list of groups for any keyword or keyword combination, or search specific categories for more groups than can be found in the directory itself, and I'm happy to do so.

But please don't show up later and wonder why we didn't save your favorite fandom, Western or non-Western.

We still have a few more weeks before Yahoo Groups shuts down access to data downloads. You can help by creating a Yahoo ID and joining Yahoo Groups. We’ll do the rest.

We’re hoping to join thousands of Yahoo Groups, ranging from Harry Potter to Xena, from Lord of the Rings to Star Trek, Anime and RPG, and from Star Wars to Furries.

The Yahoo Groups fandom rescue project is still ongoing, and we do still need help, should anyone want to venture on over to the Discord and volunteer (you'll find the current Discord invite at the top): https://yahoo-geddon.tumblr.com/

For anyone who has a Yahoo ID, you should request their data here (do it as soon as possible - deadline is Jan. 31 but I wouldn't push it in case there's an issue with yours): http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata You can donate part or all of the data you get to the fandom rescue project or to the Internet Archive.

And this is a tutorial I wrote (complete with screenshots, suitable for Windows, Mac, and Linux) for importing the mbox files that come in that data into a program to read them: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dXeXfY5Huri_8NTUn4hl-iUZq9MMRL1Qbo7bp5YZpmE/edit

According to the Organization of Transformative Works:

Popular fanmix and fan soundtrack website 8tracks recently announced that it will be shutting down on December 31, 2019. While the site might be available after this date, there’s no guarantee it will stay up - so if you’re a fanmix or fan soundtrack creator (or have created any type of playlist on 8tracks), now is a very good time to save the data from your playlists or make them available on another site.

These Tumblr posts offer detailed information from OTW and from our Tumblr blog on how to save playlists.

One of our members is helping with the race to save fandom-related 8tracks playlists. Our Tumblr post ends by saying, "If you need help saving a lot of playlists, email the list of URLs to admin@vidders.net Please put the word 8Tracks in your subject line."
